Sasha Phyars-Burgess

(American, b. 1988)

Sasha Phyars-Burgess's series, “HAIL MARY // UNTITLED AND YET TO BE DETERMINED, 41.8949° N, 87.7654° W (AUSTIN)” illustrates the experiences of communities living in the Austin neighborhood in the west side of Chicago. The title of the series references a specific intersection at the corner of Chicago and Central Avenues, where Phyars-Burgess photographs Austin residents and their spaces, at times employing the use of light leak and double exposure to create a view into their lives and experiences.

Sasha Phyars-Burgess completed a BA in Photography from Bard College, and an MFA from Cornell University. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States including the Roman Susan Gallery, Chicago, IL; the Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburg, PA; Fotografiska, New York; and at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, Philadelphia, PA; among others. Phyars-Burgess was the winner of the 2021 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award for Untitled, published by Capricious, and was the recipient of the Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues in 2021.
