Sarah Pfohl
(American, b. 1982)
Sarah Pfohl uses photography, drawing and text to address her specific relationship to place while living with chronic disability, and works to challenge dominant representations of illness. The photographs in her Flora Imperfecta series (2019-ongoing) depict organic structures in the forest where she takes her daily, prescribed walks. The images are made using a very shallow depth of field, visualizing her feelings of “otherness” and the dissonance between her external appearance of health and the complex inner realities of living with a diagnosis.
Sarah Pfohl completed her BFA from Pratt Institute (2005), MFA from Syracuse University (2014) and Ed.M from Harvard University (2011). Her work has been exhibited both domestically and internationally including at SF Camerawork, CA; Filter, IL; The Reference, South Korea; Ploygon Gallery, Canada; and the printspace gallery, UK. Pfohl has also been included in numerous publications including by Halfmoon Projects, Oranbeg Press, Soft Lightning, Nightbird Zine, Quiet Pages Press, Goldenrod Editions, Don’t Smile, Funny Looking Dog Quarterly, and Pine Island Press. In 2019, Pfohl was also shortlisted for the Palm Photo Prize and was a FOTOFILMIC18 artist. She currently lives and works in Indianapolis, Indiana.
