Film is shot and re-shot and original meanings are untethered from their moorings. Frames fragment, float and wander. Repressed layers disturb order and presentation and enigmas appear.   - Mary Tobin

Mary Tobin’s images, from her collection Physicality, present color mural prints. Both abstract and figurative, her photographs invoke the movements of Eastern and Western figures bound by restrictions. Through a series of layered images, obtained by shooting a roll of film several times to multiply expose it, Tobin delves into the political, cultural, and societal language that construct our perceptions of the world.

Tobin received a BA from Western Illinois University in English and an MBA from Dominican University in Marketing Management before continuing on to become a BFA candidate at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including showings at Artemisia Gallery in Chicago.
