Evan Hume
(American, b. 1987; resides in South Bend, IN)
For his project, Viewing Distance (2019), Evan Hume examines the role that photography plays within military surveillance and reconnaissance. Hume uses declassified images of unidentified flying objects obtained from the CIA, FBI and NSA through the Freedom of Information Act, distorting the images even further from their already cryptic nature. Many of the pictures obtained and modified for this series are decades old, but have only recently been declassified, suggesting the incomplete nature of information presented to the public and questioning the limited role images play in collective histories.
Evan Hume completed his MFA from George Washington University (2011) and his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. His work has been exhibited at AAHD Gallery, Notre Dame, IN (2018); Valet, Richmond, VA (2017); Furthermore, Washington, D.C. (2015); Delicious Spectacle, Washington, D.C. (2014) and Gallery 102, Washington, D.C. (2011). In 2020 he was awarded the Photography Award & Artist Grant with the Working Artist Org in Tacoma, WA where his work is part of their collection. Hume’s work was also included in Aperture’s 2020 Summer Open publication, “Can Photographs Provide Information When Truth Is Disrupted?”.
