Bob Herbst

(b.1956; resides Aurora, OH)

Working at the time with mostly landscape and architecture, Bob Herbst’s above pictures depict buildings in Cleveland, Ohio, and cleverly show the stark contrasts between light and dark on these buildings. For Sonato, taken at the Peter B. Lewis Building, Herbst took a series of time exposures of different reflections of passing headlights and tail lights and the traffic signals from the nearby intersection. Each image built up over a period of 7-13 minutes, leaving Herbst guessing about the quality of the final image until the negative was developed.

A contributing writer for View Camera magazine, Herbst teaches workshops on platinum/palladium printing and has taught classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the University of Akron, and Hiram College in Ohio. His works have been exhibited most recently at the Rockwell Automation Corporate Art Gallery and the Lightkeepers Gallery in Lakewood, Ohio. Herbst’s photographs are also held in the permanent collections at the Progressive Corporation and the Washington National Cathedral.
