Chris Faust

(b.1955; resides St. Paul, MN)

This project, Suburban Documentation, was developed between 1990 and 1996 with the writer and architect Frank Martin to document suburban growth in six states. Chris Faust’s panoramic black-and-white photographs of landscapes examine the tension in our cultural relationship with the natural environment. Faust uses a rich tonal quality in his works through a process called compensation development, which he learned from John Sexton, a student of Ansel Adams.

Faust attended St. Cloud State University and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. His works have appeared in over 30 group exhibitions and 11 individual exhibitions. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, which include a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship, a Bush Fellowship, a Minnesota Humanities Commission, two Graham Foundation Fellowships, and a McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Photography.
