Garrett Baumer

(American, b. 1981; resides in Chicago, IL)

In Restricted Access, Garrett Baumer dramatizes imagined scenarios in which the elaborate emergency systems devised to protect and secure humans ultimately fail. Envisioning the seats of control—spaces to which civilian access is restricted—Baumer fabricates and photographs 3D sets, accentuating the features of infrastructure designed for security and privacy. Baumer’s models become stages for the theater of human anxiety and fear in the aftermath of tragic and unforeseen events.

Garret Baumer completed his BFA in photography at the University of Louisville (2006) and MFA in photography at Columbia College Chicago (2012). He is currently an instructor at the Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, where he was previously an artist in residence in digital arts.
