Benson, Richard

American, 1943-2017

Richard Benson was a photographer, educator and pioneer of printing technologies. He traveled extensively throughout the United States capturing photos with an 8 x 10 view camera, and later a digital camera. Benson authored noted publications such as The Face of Lincoln (1979), The Work of Atget (4 volumes, 1981-85) and over a dozen Lee Friedlander monographs (1970-1991) and printed photographs for Irving Penn, Walker Evans, Paul Strand, and many others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; the Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Modern Art, New York City, NY; among others. He served as the dean of the Yale School of Art between 1996 and 2006.
