About the Photographer

Fayat, Abigaíl García

Cuban, b. 1964

Abigaíl García Fayat’s photographs capture a magical realism she sees in everyday life in Cuba. The works in the MoCP’s collection show children playing with papier-mâché puppets created by the painter, Antonia Eiriz, for popular celebrations at the neighborhood of Juanelo in Havana. Inspired by her father, photographer Sebastián Elizondo, as well as Mario García Joya, a photographer and director of photography in the film industry, Fayat worked in sculpture, ceramic, ballet, and theater until she started photographing in 1982. In the 1980s she studied under designer Raúl Martínez and was a member of Equipo de Creación Hexágono, a Cuban art collective working in performance and Land Art. She also worked for the film magazine, Cine Cubano, as well as for the Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográfica (ICAIC). Information on Fayat was provided by the Women Photographers International Archive and the Catalogo de Fotografas Cubanas.
