Butler, Jack
American, b. 1947 Oswego, New York
Born in Oswego, New York, Jack Butler completed a BA the California State College, Los Angeles (1972), an MA at the California State University, Los Angeles (1979), and an MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles (1979). The 20/20 portfolio, published in 1985 by UCLA, gathered the work of twenty photographers who had completed the MFA photography program within the last twenty years. Butler was included along with Ellen Brooks, Gillian Brown, Jo Ann Callis, Judy Coleman, Darryl J. Curran, John Divola, William Doherty, Sidney Doniger, Robbert Flick, Jeff Gates, Graham Howe, Paul Knotter, Victor Landweber, Kenneth McGowan, Philip Melnick, Patrick Nagatani, Karen O'Hearn, Pat O'Neill, Sheila Pinkel, Scott Rankin, Kenneth Shorr, and Elfie Wilkins-Nacht. Butler returned to UCLA as a member of the faculty in 1985 and he has been an active photographer and a curator for over thirty years.
