About the Photographer

Struss, Karl

American, 1886-1981

Born in 1886, Karl Struss studied photography at Columbia University under photographer Clarence H. White. His photographs were first published in magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, but he did not think of himself as a fashion photographer and went on to gain recognition from important figures in the field, such as Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz. Strauss was also a successful cinematographer, earning four Academy Award nominations and a winning once for the films Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1929).
