About the Photographer

Jin, Feng

Chinese, b. 1962 Shanghai

A major figure in Chinese mixed media art, Jin Feng’s multimedia projects often transform materials such as rubber, glue, carved stamps, and photographs into large-scale examinations of historical events and their effects on the reality of contemporary China’s profound and rapid social changes. While working as a teacher in 2001, Jin created Warm No. 1 and Warm No. 2 by photographing his own students in their usual classroom from the vantage point of an adjacent row of desks. Emphasized by the unfiltered light hitting the students’ faces, the candid expressions of these portraits provide a snapshot of the pressures and conflicted attitudes of a generation caught in China’s economic explosion.
Jin Feng graduated from Nanjing Normal University’s Department of Fine Arts in 1990. He lives and works in Shanghai.
