About the Photographer

Rosenthal, Susken

German, b. 1956

To represent a match from the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Susken Rosenthal uses a pencil to map the movement of the soccer ball for the duration of the game. Together, the graphic illustrations reflect on ways records of sport can be analyzed through highly specific and reductive methods. Stripped of nearly all of the indicators that would allow fans to affiliate with one side or the other, she condenses and abstracts space and time while also highlighting recurring patterns within play.

After studying fine art at Berlin University of the Arts and in Florence, Italy (1979-86) Susken Rosenthal was awarded a post-graduate stipendium at the California Institute of Arts, Los Angeles (1987-88). Rosenthal’s work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including in Project Upper Spaces/Lower Spaces, Haifa, Israel (2013); Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal (2012); Schwules Museum, Berlin (2011); SPACES, Cleveland, Ohio (2009); Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg (2005); Deutsches Sport & Olympia Museum, Köln (2000); in addition to creating public artwork in Vaasa, Finland (2012) and Kosice, Slowakei (2012). She lives and works in Germany, where since 1995 she has directed a number of international art projects for the artist initiative Kunstpflug in Potsdam-Mittelmark, South Brandenburg.
