About the Photographer

Reisman, Susana

Venezuelan/Italian, b. 1977

Susana Reisman prints photographs onto long strips of canvas and molds the strips into three-dimensional forms that allude to the photograph’s original subject matter, in this case, rust. She transforms the photograph from a flat, fixed representation to a mutable entity that changes with every installation. Just as the organic matter she photographs will eventually decay or change, her sculptures also slowly collapse over time due to gravity. "The photo-sculptures re-configure the framework and conditions in which the photographic image is normally perceived," she explains. "Standing before these 'photographs' we are confronted with the materiality of the photographic image as it becomes the object's skin, a delicate and impermanent surface wrapping around space."

Susana Reisman was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1977. She received a BA in economics from Wellesley College in Massachussetts (1999) and an MFA in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology (2005). She now lives and works in Toronto.
