About the Photographer

Orland, Ted

American, b. 1941

Ted Orland completed an undergraduate degree in Industrial Design at the University of Southern California (1963), and pursued a career in the field for many years, working for designer Charles Eames. After taking a workshop with Ansel Adams in 1966, he left design to pursue photography. Within a few years Orland became Adams' full time assistant. He continued his studies, completing an MFA in Interdisciplinary Creative Arts from San Francisco State University. Early on, Orland used black and white film in his own work; in more recent years he has experimented with hand-colored photographs and panoramic montages. Orland lives in Santa Cruz, California, where he is a writer and educator, in addition to his activities as a photographer.
