Melnick, Philip

American, b. 1935 Chicago, IL

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Philip Melnick moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of California, where he completed a BA (1966) and an MFA (1969). In the 1970s, shooting with a medium format camera, Melnick made black and white photographs of his surroundings both in Los Angeles, and in the Midwest. In 1985 he was included in the 20/20 portfolio, published by UCLA to celebrate twenty years of its MFA photography program. Melnick was one of twenty photographers featured, along with Ellen Brooks, Gillian Brown, Jack Butler, Darryl Curran, Jo Ann Callis, Judy Coleman, Darryl J. Curran, William Doherty, Sidney Doniger, John Divola, Robbert Flick, Jeff Gates, Graham Howe, Paul Knotter, Victor Landweber, Kenneth McGowan, Patrick Nagatani, Karen O'Hearn, Pat O'Neill, Sheila Pinkel, Scott Rankin, Kenneth Shorr, and Elfie Wilkins-Nacht.
