Malde, Pradip

American, b. Tanzania 1957

Indian by heritage, Tanzanian by birth, and now a resident of the United States, Pradip Malde takes up questions of belonging and citizenship in his photographic series Campsite for the Non-Citizen. The series is broken into subsets of three or four images that metaphorically speak to certain themes and idea, such as origins, affiliations, and demarcation. In each case Malde arranges and reshapes common objects into enigmatic tableaux. In the four photographs titled Expiration (I-IV), for instance, Malde uses a pile of dirt, a doll's head, and shorn wool to evoke an act of vanishing and a sense of loss. Born in Arusha, Tanzania, Malde attended Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, graduating in 1980. He first traveled to the United States in 1985, and during that visit he initiated what would be a long-term involvement with the Imogen Cunningham Trust, as a printer, curator, and writer. Malde has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, California State University at Long Beach, among other institutions, and is currently a professor of Fine Arts at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
