About the Photographer

MacGregor, Greg

American, b. 1941

Greg MacGregor earned an MS in Physics from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1964 and worked as an astrophysicist from 1966-1970. He returned to school in 1970, enrolling at San Francisco State University, where he completed an MA in Photography. Since 1980 MacGregor has been professor of Photography at California State University in Hayward. Since that time, over the course of multiple decades, MacGregor has used photography to examine various areas of the American West. This has included the state of California, where he resides, in photographs such as Grafitti on Concrete Structure Arcata California (1981), which was taken in the northern reaches of the state. MacGregor's purview, though, is more expansive and often engaged with sites of historical interest. For more than twenty years MacGregor has photographed in the Great Basin desert, which spans from Utah to California. He has also completed a number of photographic projects that retrace the paths of westward expansion, including the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific Coast (1803-1806) and pioneer routes such as the Oregon and California Trails, documenting these locations as they appear today, transformed significantly over 200 years.
