About the Photographer

Ito, Kei

Japanese, b. 1991 Tokyo

Kei Ito’s "Sungazing" series conceptualizes the 1945 nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and his grandfather’s firsthand account of the explosion appearing “like hundreds of suns lighting up in the sky.” Ito created this scroll by moving Type-C photographic paper in front of a small aperture and exposing it to the sun in the rhythm of his breath--opening the aperture while inhaling and closing while exhaling. He repeats the breathing motion 108 times, a significant number in Japanese Buddhism. Kei Ito completed his MFA from the Maryland Institute of College of Art (2016) and BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology (2014). He is a runner-up for the 2016 Snider Prize.
