About the Photographer

Goldsmith, Lynn

American, b. 1948

Lynn Goldsmith founded the LGI Photo Agency in 1967. One of the first agencies to specialize in celebrity portraits for editorial use, LGI would represent more than two hundred photographers over the next thirty years. Ten books of Goldsmith's own photographs have been published, including a number focused on rock and roll acts like Bruce Springsteen and the Police, and she has produced images for Life, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, and other major magazines. After thirty years of working as a commercial photographer, Goldsmith sold LGI in 1997 in order to concentrate on her own work in photographic projects. The photograph Time on Her Hands (2006) is from In the Looking Glass, a series of self-portraits set in opulent constructed environments, in which Goldsmith transposes her own face onto the body of a mannequin.

Goldsmith graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in English and Philosophy. In the 1980s she briefly put photography aside to work as a recording artist, under the moniker Will Powers, collaborating with Jacob Brackman and Steve Winwood on her debut album Dancing for Mental Health. She also directed and produced the videos that accompanied the album.
