About the Photographer

Garduno, Flor

Mexican, b. 1957

Flor Garduño explores nature, dreams, and the female form, celebrating her subjects with a seamless blending of light and shadow. As in Basket of Light, Garduño's works deal primarily with the female body, Latin-American themes and mythology, as well as the sensuousness of the body and organic items such as flowers and pomegranates. Sometimes using her young daughter Azul as a model, Garduño says that her most recent photographs reflect her "personal, interior landscape." With a surrealist, dream-like slant, her works recall ancient rituals and the power of the feminine.

Currently dividing her time between Mexico and Switzerland, Garduno was born in 1957 and trained as a printing assistant with Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Her photographs have been exhibited widely in Europe, Canada, the US and Latin America, and are held in many permanent collections, including those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Bibliotèque National, Paris. Garduño has also received a photography grant from the Swiss government and a fellowship from the Mexican government.
