Cristina García Rodero was born in Puertollano, Spain. Before she took up photography, she attended the School of Fine Arts at the Univsersity of Madrid for painting. After, while working full-time in education, she spent much of her time photographing festivals and traditions taking place in Spain and across Mediterranean Europe. This project culminated in her book España Oculta, published in 1989, which won the "Book of the Year Award" at the Arles Festival of Photography.
