About the Photographer

Fandell, Ken

American, b. 1971

Artist Ken Fandell is known for witty, conceptual works in the mediums of photography, digital collage, text, and video. In the video Skies Study, Fandell creates a rhythmic and hypnotic sequence of still images of skies in various cities at different times of the day. As the images pulse between lightness and darkness, cloudiness and clearness, details such as power lines, buildings and airplane contrails punctuate the sequence, interrupting the flow of varying cloud forms with intrusions from the human world. The video is presented in a folded case featuring a collage of Fandell's sky photographs. Fandell began his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara before enrolling at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he completed a BFA in photography (1993). He went on to earn an MFA in photography and new genres at the University of Illinois at Chicago (1996). Fandell lives and works in Chicago.
