About the Photographer

Conniff, Greg

American, b. 1945

For over twenty years, landscape photographer Greg Conniff has worked and lived in Wisconsin. While most of his work takes the Midwestern rural landscape as its subject, he has photographed in New York State as well as the deep South. A gardener, Conniff has made an extended photographic study of his garden in Madison, WI, and that of friends in Oneonta, New York. These pictures are beautiful meditations on growth and seasonal change, order and chaos in the landscape.

Conniff was born in 1944. After receiving his BA from the College of Columbia University in New York City, Conniff went on to become a lawyer (LL.B. from the University of Virginia), taking mostly artists as his clients until he gave up his practice to become a full time photographer. He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. His photography exhibitions have included shows at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, Kansas; and the Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin. His works are included in private and museum collections nationwide.
