About the Photographer

Chakeres, John

American, b. 1952

Responding intuitively to his physical environment, John Chakeres makes photographs that explore the abstract qualities of light, texture, and color. He states, “The photographs are not so much about the place where they are made, but more about the raw materials I find there to create them. My photographs have always had more to do with the concept of the found object than a record or witness to an event or place… These places of pristine light, brilliant colors, clear air are indeed places in the world, they are also the place in my mind, my subconscious, the source I go to for my creativity.”

John Chakeres was born in Ohio and completed a BFA in Photography and Printmaking from Ohio University (1976). Currently he teaches photography and digital imaging at Columbus State Community College, Ohio, where he has been on the faculty since 2000.
