Gillian Brown completed a BA at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island (1973) before receiving her MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (1980). The 20/20 portfolio, published in 1985 by UCLA, gathered the work of twenty photographers who had completed the MFA photography program within the last twenty years. Brown was included along with Ellen Brooks, Jack Butler, Jo Ann Callis, Judy Coleman, Darryl J. Curran, John Divola, William Doherty, Sidney Doniger, Robbert Flick, Jeff Gates, Graham Howe, Paul Knotter, Victor Landweber, Kenneth McGowan, Philip Melnick, Patrick Nagatani, Karen O'Hearn, Pat O'Neill, Sheila Pinkel, Scott Rankin, Kenneth Shorr, and Elfie Wilkins-Nacht.
