Ellen Brooks was born in Los Angeles, California and completed a BA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1968), and an MA and MFA from the University of California at Los Angeles (1970, 1971). The 20/20 portfolio, published in 1985 by UCLA, gathered the work of twenty photographers who had completed the MFA photography program within the last twenty years. Brooks was included along with Gillian Brown, Jack Butler, Jo Ann Callis, Judy Coleman, Darryl J. Curran, John Divola, William Doherty, Sidney Doniger, Robbert Flick, Jeff Gates, Graham Howe, Paul Knotter, Victor Landweber, Kenneth McGowan, Philip Melnick, Patrick Nagatani, Karen O'Hearn, Pat O'Neill, Sheila Pinkel, Scott Rankin, Kenneth Shorr, and Elfie Wilkins-Nacht. Brooks has been an active artist for over thirty years, and has taught at a number of colleges and universities, including the San Francisco Art Institute; the School of Visual Arts, New York; and Tisch School of Arts at New York University.
