About the Photographer

Borges, Phil

American, b. 1942

Phil Borges graduated with a degree in Physiology from University of California, Berkeley in 1969. After taking a photography course at Napa Valley College in 1987, at the age of 45, Borges left his profession in dentistry to become a full-time photographer. His early photographs were mostly portraits of his friends and family, as in the image Paternity (1990). From the mid-1990s onwards Borges has used his photographic projects to bring attention to indigenous populations throughout the world, partnering with organizations such as Amnesty International and CARE. To further these goals, Borges co-founded Blue Earth Alliance, which sponsors photographic projects focusing on endangered cultures.
