About the Photographer
Baltermants, Dmitri
Russian, 1912-1990
Dmitri Baltermants was a prominent Soviet photojournalist who was born in Warsaw, Poland. He was an official Kremlin photographer and he worked for the Soviet daily Izvestia and was picture editor at the magazine Ogonyok. During WWII he covered the Battle of Stalingrad and the Red Army in Russia and the Ukraine. His images were often censored by Soviet authorities because they wanted the public to only see images that portrayed military service in a positive light. Most of his censored images were made public in the 1960s.
